These are Kenya’s two most popular parks… because it’s where all the popular animals go – lion, leopard, cheetah, elephants, wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle. You’ll find them and so many other species across the sun-dappled tracts of these two great parks.
As the lion is considered the king of the wildlife, the Masai Mara National Reserve is considered the king of Kenya’s parks. It’s hard to think of an Africa safari without a stop at the Mara. It’s a land of numerous prides of lions and other big cats, including all the famous “Big Five” wildlife.
Amboseli National Park is a dreamy place of soaring peaks like Mt. Kilimanjaro, which frames this vibrant reserve filled with stately parades of big-tusked elephants. Though the reserve doesn’t contain the vast swaths of terrain like the Mara, it is still alive with bountiful displays of big game all set in a picturesque setting.
Join us for five days of Kenya safari fun with your hosts and guides from Africa Kenya Safaris.
What’s Cool About These Parks?
The Masa Mara never fails to impress with its golden rolling hills, iconic acacia trees, and never-ending wildlife. It’s also home to the Great Migration, an onslaught of wildlife – thousands of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles pouring into the Mara on their search for food and water.
Amboseli may look familiar – that’s because you’ve probably seen its likeness in photos with the immense, snow-capped mass of Mt. Kilimanjaro standing sentinel over the park. This is the home of great-tusked elephants marching along the plains to their favorite watering holes. And the rich birdlife here is surprising as well – look for kingfisher, heron, pelican, eagle, and Egyptian goose.

Day 1
Nairobi – Masai Mara National Park
5 – 6 Hour Drive
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
5:00 am. Get ready to safari! Your Africa Kenya Safaris driver/guide will pick you up early to get on the road. Hop into your private 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Jeep and watch the African sunrise light up the new day.
We’ll stop in the small town of Narok for breakfast and continue on the road to the Masai Mara. We should arrive around mid-morning.
Displayed before you, the park’s rolling hills and iconic acacia trees present an invitation for exploration. This is the richest ecosystem in the region, filled with large and small wildlife.
Your guide knows these lands well and will take you to the best areas to look for lions, leopards, cheetahs, and all the big game.
We’ll break for a picnic lunch and relax amidst the sweeping savannah and bright Mara sky.
Then we’re off for more game drives and discovery. Toward evening, look for a colorful sunset as we head back to our safari lodge or tented camp for dinner and rest.

Day 2
Full-Day at the Masai Mara
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Time for an early morning game drive to take in the new day – the soft light plays on the fields and trees as the wildlife emerges from the night.
This is a day to explore as much as you wish but you can also take time to relax at your accommodation. Just discuss with your guide – he’ll always have suggestions.
If you’re here from July – October, you’ll get to witness the vast animal movement of the Great Migration, a yearly event when uncountable herds of wildebeests, zebra, and gazelle cross into the Mara from the neighboring Serengeti searching for water and grasses.
We’ll head down to the Mara River, site of the animal crossing to view the hippos and crocodiles who make their home here. Also waiting for the migrating herds are large numbers of predators like lions and cheetahs. Sometimes the drama of nature plays out right before us in all its explosive emotion.
Adding to the drama of your Africa safari, take advantage of an optional hot air balloon safari over the dawning park. Rise with the sun until the splendor of the Mara is in full display below. An unforgettable moment.
Add a cultural dimension to your safari – we offer an optional visit to a local village. Here, you can meet the Maasai people and learn about their indigenous lifestyle and perhaps enjoy their handicrafts and colorful beadwork.
We’ll head back to our accommodation for dinner and perhaps an evening at the boma.

Day 3
Masai Mara – Amboseli
9 Hour Drive
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
This is a big journey day so we’ll be up with the sun for an early departure from the Masai Mara. Today, we’re headed for Amboseli Park.
But we’ll break up the trip with stops to admire the fields, the farmland, and Kenya’s arresting natural scenery. We’ll also enjoy a lunch stop to rest, stretch, and relax.
You’ll know we’re nearing Amboseli when you spot the towering spire of iconic Mt. Kilimanjaro in the distance. We should arrive at the park in the afternoon, in time for an exploratory game drive.
You won’t have to look far or long to find the park’s famous free-ranging elephants often marching in stately processions.
Toward evening the characteristic clouds hovering around Kilimanjaro’s summit may part revealing the famous snow-capped peak.
Dinner and rest will be at your Amboseli safari lodge or tented camp.

Day 4
Full Day at Amboseli
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
The day is all ours to do as we wish – go game driving or spend some relaxation time at your accommodation. The choice is yours.
But let’s get our safari on with an early morning drive through the park, tracking for elephants, lions, cheetah, buffalo, and the rest of the big game this park is known for.
We’ll settle in for breakfast as we enjoy the air, the sights, and the sounds of the park all around us.
More explorations follow as we discover new areas of the park such as Observation Hill, a wonderful spot to observe the wildlife and marshes with all their birdlife.
Lunch follows and we’ll plan out our afternoon’s activities – rest or maybe check out the park’s lakes or woodlands.
When evening approaches keep an eye on Kilimanjaro – its snowy peak may just appear through the clouds. Our fourth safari night will be at our Amboseli accommodation.

Day 5
Amboseli – Nairobi
4 Hour Drive
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Our last day, so let’s be up and ready to see more wildlife on an easy pre-breakfast drive.
We’ll enjoy breakfast at our accommodation, surrounded by nature’s wonders. And then another final game drive looking for any special last sights and memories.
Soon, we’re off to Nairobi and we’ll stop for lunch to break up the journey.
We should arrive at about 4:30 pm and bring you to your hotel, residence, or place of your choosing.
Five full days – Kenya’s busiest parks and lots of wildlife. Thanks so much for spending this special time with us. From all of us at Africa Kenya Safaris, a big Asante!
