HALF-DAY TOUR
DISCOVER MOMBASA
Explore Exotic Mombasa - History, Culture & Shopping!
Starting from/returning to your Diani Beach or other coastal resort.

Mombasa is color, tastes, sights, and sounds – an international bazaar. Kenya’s oldest city (900 AD), this buzzing coastal port is an exotic mix of Swahili, Arab, and Portuguese cultures. You’ll come upon the city’s colorful history around every corner and through its narrow Old Town streets.
We’ll explore the ethnic markets with their unique and personal treasures. Discover the varied neighborhoods of Arab, Portuguese, and Asian settlers whose lifestyles have brought cultural vibrancy to this modern city.
During this busy, sensory tour, we will also visit historic Fort Jesus, a monument to Mombasa’s ever-changing rule by numerous marauding nations over the centuries. We’ll also tour Akamba Handicraft to view one of Kenya’s largest wood carving establishments.
The Turmoil of Fort Jesus
This is a massive structure with thick towering walls and yet it was vanquished no less than nine times since its construction in 1631. For whoever controlled Fort Jesus controlled the gateway from Africa to India. Successive waves of Portuguese, Muslim, Swahili, and British warriors struggled to command the mighty fortress and with it, the Indian Ocean trade routes.
We’ll visit the fort, now a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, explore its grounds, and take in the colorful displays of warship remnants, Omani weaponry, jewelry, pottery, and many more artifacts.

Akamba Handicrafts
Discover a treasure of hand-carved masks, ornaments, sculptures, and all kinds of decorative objects at this home-grown Mombasa cooperative. Akamba has grown over the last fifty years from 300 to about 5000 artisans creating high-quality carvings based on both animal and human-inspired designs.
We’ll see up close how the carvings are fashioned – from design to rough outline, to fine detail and finish. An excellent stop to find some memorable souvenirs.
