What’s Cool About Tsavo East?

The lions. They are legendary and unique in Tsavo. Unlike other male lions you’ll see in Africa, these don’t have the characteristic manes. But they do have a reputation for ferocity. Over a hundred years ago, when the railroads were being built, the workers were terrorized by the fierce “man-eaters” of Tsavo.

The park is home to hundreds of lions so there’s a good chance we’ll spot some of these big cats, as well as cheetahs.

Thousands of elephants roam the broad rugged plains of Tsavo. And they too can appear quite special. You may do a double-take when spotting some of these big tuskers marching by, “dressed up” with a light rouge coating.

Their secret? They enjoy taking a dirt bath, rolling in the park’s red-oxide soil, giving them an unexpected rosy glow.

You don’t always think of the birdlife when going on safari but you can’t miss Tsavo’s over 500 species of colorful birds, adorning the trees and skies of the park.

Time Capsule:

Tsavo East National Park

185 km – 2 ½ hr. drive

5:00 am – We’ll be up early and ready for our Africa Kenya Safaris driver/guide who will swing by our hotel or resort in a 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Jeep. Hop in and join your fellow adventurers for a full day of safari fun.

Now we’ll head down the Nairobi-Mombasa highway and watch the sun rising over the passing farms and homesteads on our route to Tsavo East Park.

It won’t be long before we come to the iconic gate of the great park and past that, the immense weathered plains of Tsavo stretching out to the horizon. These are the savannahs that hold rich numbers of lions, elephants, cheetahs, zebras, antelope, buffalo, and giraffes.

Now it’s time for our first big game drive and your guide is an expert at tracking and locating the park’s wildlife. We’ll see how many of Africa’s “Big Five” we can spot and also have the fun of seeing the smaller species that make this great park their home, animals such as kudu, impala, and topi.

Tsavo has other surprises waiting for you like hippos and crocodiles along its rivers and a bright collection of ostriches, buzzards, starlings, kingfishers, hornbills, herons, ibis, and even love birds.

We’ll enjoy lunch amongst the stirrings of all this wildlife and then take another game drive before turning our 4 x 4 Jeep back to the Kenya coast.

We’ll have you back at your hotel or resort by dinnertime with new tales to tell about the lions, elephants, giraffes, and other wildlife you saw during your one-day beach getaway to Tsavo East National Park.

We enjoyed meeting you and hope to see you again on another African Kenya Safaris adventure. Thank you for your adventuresome spirit!
