Discover Kenya’s Greatest Reserve

Lion and giraffe seen on safari with Africa Kenya Safaris

There’s a reason the Masai Mara Reserve is known throughout the world – actually thousands of reasons. The first is the big cats; the park’s acacia-doted savannahs are thickly populated with numerous prides of lions, plus leopards and cheetahs, slinking through the grasses and prowling over the rolling hills.

But then, there are the thousands, sometimes millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelle moving over the Mara in an endless procession of animals known as the Great Migration – a spectacle of wildlife beyond anything else seen on the planet.

This absolute density of animals in the Mara means you will be busy spotting Africa’s “Big Five” – lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino, plus 95 other mammal species like giraffe, antelope, eland, topi, fox, jackal, hyena, and a buzzing canopy of birdlife throughout the park.

No matter where you choose to start your safari – Nairobi, Mombasa, Diani Beach, or the other resorts along the Kenya coast – all roads and routes lead to our most popular park.

We’ll Create the Perfect Masai Mara Safari

Go By Road

Want to really immerse yourself in the wonders of Masai Mara? We offer two-day, three-day, or longer adventures exclusively to the reserve. You’ll spend your days in a custom 4 x 4 Landcruiser Jeep, rumbling over golden hills and spotting every sort of game.

You’ll travel down to the Mara River, site of the great wildebeest crossing, where crocodiles await and more predators like lions and cheetah prowl for their survival.

It’s a pretty drive to the Masai Mara park from Nairobi. Entering Masai country, you’ll spot the local tribespeople in their colorful wraps, tending to their flocks.

Or Go By Air

But if you want to quickly get to the park, we also offer fly-in and fly-and-drive safaris. We’ll bring you to a local airport in Nairobi or near your coastal resort. You’ll sail over an early Kenyan morning with the sun lighting up the fields and forests.

In just a few short hours you’ll lightly touch down at an airstrip, right near the park. There, your guide will greet you, take your bags and usher you to a private 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Safari Jeep. You’ll head to your Masai Mara accommodation to freshen up or if you wish, go straight to your first of many game drives in this amazing park.

Meet the Maasai

They are the aboriginal people that have lived on these lands for hundreds of years and for which the great park is named. Easily recognizable in their bright plaid wraps or shukas, you’ll see the men shepherding their cattle and goats, supporting their pastoral live style.

While at the park, make time to visit one of their local villages, where you can meet the Maasai, visit their bomas, and learn about their culture and ceremonies. You may even partake in one of their famous jumping dances!

The Maasai are also stewards of the areas surrounding the Masai Mara, specially protected tracks of land called conservancies. You may want to visit these lightly touristed areas as well since the wildlife are plentiful and you may even enjoy the company of a Maasai guide.

We’ll be happy to arrange for a visit to a Maasai village or a conservancy right near the park.

When Do You Want to Visit?

The big cats and the dozens of wildlife species don’t have any downtime during the year – there are always in sight on the great savannahs of this storied park.

The climate here is mild and generally sunny year-round. So, the game viewing is excellent any time you choose to go on safari.

However, the park is known for its peak migration season from July through October. These are the months you can expect to witness thousands upon thousands of wildebeests, zebra, and gazelle invading the park on their annual trek for water and more sustainable grasses.

Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, and a diverse array of other wildlife call the Mara home, offering abundant opportunities for thrilling game drives. Our expert guides will lead you on exciting safaris, helping you spot the Big Five and capture remarkable moments with your camera.

Cultural Encounters with the Maasai

In addition to its incredible wildlife, the Masai Mara offers rich cultural experiences, allowing you to connect with the Maasai people, known for their vibrant traditions and way of life. You can visit Maasai villages to learn about their customs, witness traditional dances, and even engage in beadwork and handicrafts with the locals. These cultural encounters provide a deeper understanding of the region’s heritage and the harmonious coexistence between the Maasai and the wildlife that inhabits this remarkable ecosystem. Whether you’re exploring the wild or immersing yourself in the local culture, the Masai Mara offers a diverse range of activities that promise an unforgettable and enriching safari experience.

The Great Migration in the Masai Mara is a mesmerizing wildlife spectacle that unfolds annually, and its timing is largely determined by the movement of millions of wildebeests and zebras in search of fresh grazing pastures and water sources. Typically, the migration begins in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, usually around December, as the herds start their journey northward. By February, the herds gather in the southern Serengeti for calving season, a period when thousands of young wildebeest are born, offering prime hunting opportunities for predators.

River Crossings and the Mara River

One of the most exhilarating moments of the Great Migration is the dramatic river crossings that occur when the herds reach the Mara River. This thrilling event typically takes place from July to October, with the exact timing influenced by weather patterns. As the wildebeests and zebras attempt to cross the river, crocodiles lurk in the waters, and predators wait on the riverbanks. It’s a heart-pounding spectacle that draws wildlife enthusiasts and safari photographers from around the world. Witnessing this iconic river crossing is an absolute highlight of a Masai Mara safari.

Experience the Migration Magic

To experience the Great Migration in the Masai Mara, it’s advisable to plan your safari between July and September when the river crossings are at their peak. This is when the Mara’s grasslands come alive with the thundering hooves of wildebeests and the striking stripes of zebras. However, the exact timing can vary from year to year, so it’s essential to consult with experienced safari operators like Africa Kenya Safaris who can provide up-to-date information and create a safari itinerary that maximizes your chances of witnessing this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon. Whether you’re an avid wildlife enthusiast or simply seeking an unforgettable adventure, the Great Migration in the Masai Mara promises an unrivalled safari experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.

The ideal duration for your stay in the Masai Mara can vary depending on your preferences, budget, and overall travel itinerary. At Africa Kenya Safaris, we offer a range of safari packages that cater to different lengths of stay, allowing you to choose the duration that best suits your needs. However, as a general guideline, we recommend spending a minimum of three to four days in the Masai Mara to fully immerse yourself in the wildlife-rich landscapes and make the most of your safari adventure.

Three to Four Days: A Balanced Safari Experience

Spending three to four days in the Masai Mara allows you to enjoy a well-rounded safari experience. During this time, you can embark on multiple game drives, explore diverse habitats, and encounter a wide variety of wildlife. This duration also provides opportunities to witness the Great Migration if your visit coincides with the migration season. Additionally, you’ll have time to engage in cultural interactions with the Maasai people, take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise, and capture stunning photographs of the Mara’s iconic landscapes. It strikes a balance between adventure and relaxation, ensuring that you return home with a deep appreciation for this remarkable destination.

Extended Stays: Deeper Exploration

For travellers seeking a more immersive experience and a deeper connection with the Masai Mara, an extended stay of five to seven days or more may be ideal. With additional time, you can explore remote and less-visited areas of the Mara, further enhancing your chances of unique wildlife encounters. You’ll also have the flexibility to enjoy leisurely game drives, extended photography sessions, and additional cultural experiences. An extended stay allows you to fully savour the magic of the Masai Mara, embracing its tranquility, its vibrancy, and its remarkable beauty. Whether you choose a shorter or longer stay, a safari in the Masai Mara promises unforgettable moments and a profound connection with the natural world.

The weather in the Masai Mara varies throughout the year, and understanding these seasonal changes can help you plan the best time for your safari adventure. Here’s an overview of the typical weather patterns in the Masai Mara:

Dry Season (June to October):

The dry season, which is considered the best time for wildlife viewing, spans from June to October. During these months, the weather is generally dry and cool, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). The skies are usually clear, and the grasses are shorter, making it easier to spot wildlife. July to September is particularly renowned for the Great Migration river crossings.

Short Rains (November to December):

In November and December, the Masai Mara experiences the short rains. While these rains are relatively brief and sporadic, they can bring lush greenery to the savannah. Daytime temperatures remain pleasant, but occasional showers may occur. This time of year is often quieter in terms of tourist crowds, offering a more intimate safari experience.

Long Rains (March to May):

The long rains typically occur from March to May, with April being the wettest month. During this period, the Masai Mara experiences heavy rainfall, transforming the landscape into a lush paradise. While the rains are essential for the ecosystem, they can make travel challenging due to muddy roads. Many lodges and camps close during this time. However, for birdwatchers and photographers, the long rains can provide unique opportunities to capture the beauty of the Mara in its greenest splendour.

Understanding the Masai Mara’s weather patterns allows you to choose the time that aligns with your safari preferences, whether you prefer the vibrant green landscapes of the wet season or the prime wildlife viewing opportunities of the dry season. Regardless of when you visit, the Masai Mara promises awe-inspiring moments and unforgettable wildlife encounters.
