- Diani Beach
Five days and three classic wildlife parks – plenty of time and space to reach safari consciousness. The drama of the Tsavo’s lions and Amboseli’s marching families of elephants will draw you into the moving rhythms of the natural world.
You know Amboseli Park even if you’ve never been there. You’ve seen the photos – great herds of elephants standing before the imposing form of snow-capped Mt. Kilimanjaro. The park is a photographic gem and you’ll be drawn to create your own photos and memories in this compact but popular park.
The Tsavo parks are amongst the oldest and largest in Kenya. Tsavo West tends to surprise with its lava tubes, baobab trees, and unexpected green springs oasis. You’ll find all the big game but also crocodiles and hippos too.
When you see big red dusted elephants strolling by you’ll know you’ve landed at Tsavo East. The park’s great expanse of plains are accented with red oxide soil and it’s not unusual to see the big elephants giving themselves a dirt bath makeover. You’ll find lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and all the rest of the wildlife family in this venerable park.
And when our time in the parks is complete you can hop aboard the Madaraka Express for more wildlife viewing on your way to the Kenya coast and Diani Beach.
What’s Cool About These Parks?
You don’t always get a guarantee on safari but you do at Amboseli – the free-ranging elephants are so populous you’re guaranteed lots of sightings. But you’ll also be looking for lions, leopards, rhino, buffalo, cheetah, jackal, hyena, and much more. This is an active place.
Rhinos don’t come with every safari but at Tsavo West, you’ll be treated to a visit to their unique rhino sanctuary. Over 80 of these rather large but gentle creatures make their home here.
The Tsavo parks are renowned for their legendary lions, truly the stuff of legend. You’ll hear tales of their ferocity, especially during the colonial era.

Day 1
Nairobi – Amboseli National Park
3 – 4 Hour Drive
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
7:00 am Your African Kenya Safaris driver/guide will be by early at your hotel, residence, or place of your choosing. Hop into your private 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Jeep to begin this five-day safari of Kenya’s classic parks.
As we head out on the Nairobi/Mombasa Highway, take in the rich morning light spreading over the passing farms, homesteads, and hills. Your safari is just starting.
Well before we arrive at Amboseli, you’re certain to spot the rising peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro – our beacon to the park.
Arriving late morning, we’ll bring you to your safari lodge or tented camp to refresh and enjoy lunch. And then it’s time to head out on your first real game drive.
One of the many fun aspects about Amboseli, besides the postcard-perfect form of Kilimanjaro dominating the landscape, is the sheer number of large free-ranging elephants that you simply can’t miss. The park is known for this very healthy population.
But we’ll also be tracking for lion, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe… the list goes on. Amboseli hosts all the large and many smaller species.
Toward evening, we might get lucky with a view of Kilimanjaro’s snow-covered peak as the cloud cover peels away. We’ll spend our first safari night at your accommodation.

Day 2
Full-Day at Amboseli
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Let’s get up early to watch the wildlife stir and enjoy the easy, quiet of the new day. We’ll take a game drive and then head back for breakfast.
This is a day of unlimited game drives… if you wish. It’s your choice – just plan it out with your guide. He’ll have lots of ideas and suggestions.
As we roam the park keep an eye out for all sorts of species like impala, Masai giraffe, wildebeest, hyena, jackal, monkey, and even baboon.
Soon it will be lunchtime and you can relax or head right back out to the bush.
We might head up an unusual pyramid-like hill called Observation Hill. Leaving our Jeep we can take in great vistas of the park, its marshes, elephants, and birdlife such as pelican, kingfisher, Egyptian goose, and egret.
Rounding out the day, if you wish you can partake of an optional visit to a nearby Maasai village. You’ll learn about their lifestyle up close as you meet these fascinating indigenous people.
Our second safari night will be at your Amboseli accommodation.

Day 3
Amboseli – Tsavo West
2 Hour Drive
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
On our final day at Amboseli, we might just get another view of Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped summit.
We’ll make the two-hour drive to Tsavo West and possibly spot more game on the way. You’ll soon be greeted by the park’s green rolling hills and other inviting landforms like its acacia woods.
Tsavo West features all the big game – everything from lions to leopards to crocodiles. Not every park offers glimpses of the elusive but gentle rhinos, but here you can visit the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, home to over 80 of these endangered creatures.
Another unusual feature that you’ll come upon is Mzima Springs, an unexpected oasis of lush flora, exotic birds and fish, crocodiles, and hippos. We can leave our 4 x 4 to explore the palm-fringed banks of the oasis. There’s even a special hippo viewing area.
And if all that isn’t enough you’ll come upon volcanic artifacts like giant lava tubes and the quirky, towering baobab trees.
We’ve changed our accommodations and you’ll spend the evening at your Tsavo West safari lodge or tented camp.

Day 4
Tsavo West – Tsavo East National Park
1-Hour Drive
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
This is an easy drive and we’ll be looking for more big game on our way to Tsavo East, home of the legendary Tsavo lions, whose tales of ferocity have fascinated generations.
This sprawling park is a land of big tracts out to the horizon, of elephants and lots of other large game.
Your guide will bring you to several well-recognized watering holes like the man-made Aruba Dam and the natural formation of Mudanda Rock. Tsavo’s thirsty inhabitants frequent these oases in the large park to quench their thirst. You’re sure to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, and many other species coming to these respites.
Another famous watering spot is the Galana River which bisects the park. Here, you’ll find crocodile, hippo, waterbuck, and more.
Tsavo East also boasts unusual volcanic formations – check out the Yatta Plateau, the longest hardened lava flow in the world.
Toward evening you’re certain to see one of Tsavo’s glorious sunsets as you make your way to your Tsavo East accommodation.

Day 5
Tsavo East – Kenya Coast/Diani Beach
Two-hour train ride
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
It’s day number five of our safari so let’s get in one more game drive through the park’s rugged terrain.
After breakfast, we’ll head over to the train station at Voi where we should arrive at about 11:45 am.
On our trip to the coast, there will still be more opportunities to spot Tsavo’s wildlife from your train – the Madaraka Express. We’ll head over to the train station at Voi where your guide will make sure you are safely boarded in first-class.
This high-speed train is built for air-conditioned comfort with soft reclining seats. The large picture windows will provide colorful vistas of Tsavo East’s great plains and wildlife.
Should you be hungry or want to stretch your legs, visit the buffet car for drinks and snacks. You’ll soon arrive at the modern train station in Mombasa.
What a spectacular way to traverse the Kenyan countryside – in a 4 x 4 Jeep and then on the speedy Madaraka Express to the coast. From Mt. Kilimanjaro to the sands of Diani Beach, we hope you enjoyed the best of our beautiful country and its wildlife. From the team at Africa Kenya Safari, a big thanks for joining our five-day Kenya Classic Safaris.
