Samburu's lightly touristed wilderness opens the trip, Aberdare's treetop lodges add cool rainforest and black rhino, Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha bring Rift Valley birdlife and a sailing safari, and the Masai Mara closes with the richest ecosystem in the region.

Nairobi → Samburu
7:30am pickup, passing through Kenya's scenic central highlands with stops at a local market and to mark our crossing of the equator.
Samburu is a wide-open place - popular for a northern park but still lightly touristed, with plenty of elephants and Africa's other Big Five, plus unusual species like the Somali ostrich. We spend our first night on safari at our lodge or tented camp.

Full-Day at Samburu
Elephant, zebra, buffalo, warthog, antelope and the reticulated giraffe - this arid park is bisected by the refreshing Ewaso Nyiro River, where wildlife come to drink.
Side trips to the greener Shaba and Buffalo Springs reserves add more wildlife viewing. Optional visit to the local Samburu tribe, closely related to the Maasai, available today.

Samburu → Aberdare
An early final game drive through Samburu, then south to the highland reaches of Aberdare National Park - a cool spot of waterfalls and mountain streams.
Stay in perhaps the most unique accommodation of the safari - a treetop hotel, with spectacular views over the park and wildlife visiting the waterholes and salt licks below. Look for elephant, black rhino, buffalo and antelope emerging from the forest.

Aberdare → Lake Nakuru → Lake Naivasha
Descending from the treetops, the scenic drive to Lake Nakuru stops to view the impressive Thompson's Falls. Nakuru's acacia woods, dramatic escarpments and shoreline wildlife - giraffe, white rhino and flamingo - make for a memorable stop.
We continue on to nearby Lake Naivasha, to relax and enjoy dinner at our accommodation on the lakeshore.

Lake Naivasha → Masai Mara
An early morning sailing safari past hippos, exotic birds and grazing antelope, then a guided walking safari at neighboring Crescent Island Sanctuary among zebra, impala and giraffe.
Then it's on to the Masai Mara - rolling hills and golden savannahs greet us with great prides of lion, plus cheetah, leopard, elephant and buffalo. We take the first of many game drives upon arrival, with a sunset to close the day.

Full Day at the Masai Mara
An early start in the soft morning light, past the park's iconic acacia trees. During the Great Migration season (July-October) uncountable wildebeest and zebra flow in from the neighboring Serengeti.
Lunch down at the Mara River, site of the great crossing. Optional pre-dawn hot air balloon safari and Maasai village visit available today.

Masai Mara → Nairobi
Breakfast at your accommodation, then out of the park and north for the drive back to Nairobi.
Arriving at about 4:30pm - from Kenya's cool north to stunning Rift Valley lakes to the vast sweep of the Mara, a diverse and colorful safari behind you.
