Climb Mount Kenya & Kilimanjaro — the Roof of Africa

Guided multi-day mountain climbing adventures for active travellers, with the option to combine your summit attempt with a Kenya or Tanzania safari.

For travellers looking for a physical challenge alongside their wildlife experience, Africa Kenya Safaris arranges guided ascents of two of Africa's most iconic peaks: Mount Kenya, Africa's second-highest mountain, and Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the undisputed Roof of Africa.

Both climbs are organised with experienced mountain guides, porters and cooks, acclimatisation built into the schedule, and a choice of routes depending on your fitness level, time available and preference for scenery versus solitude.

Mount Kenya climbing route

Mount Kenya

Africa's second-highest peak, in Kenya's own backyard

Mount Kenya rises from the central highlands as a jagged volcanic massif, its lower slopes covered in montane forest and bamboo before giving way to alpine moorland and glaciated peaks.

Most guided climbs aim for Point Lenana, the highest point reachable without technical climbing equipment, on a 4–6 day itinerary that allows time to adjust to the altitude. Routes pass through several distinct vegetation zones, with the chance to spot elephant, buffalo and colobus monkeys on the lower slopes before reaching open moorland.

A Mount Kenya climb combines naturally with a short Nairobi or Amboseli safari either side of the trek.

Mount Kilimanjaro

The Roof of Africa

At 5,895m, Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the continent and one of the most accessible high-altitude summits in the world, requiring no technical climbing skills — just fitness, the right pace, and good acclimatisation.

Several established routes ascend the mountain, each with a different balance of scenery, traffic and acclimatisation profile — typically taking 5–9 days. Our team can advise on the route best suited to your timeframe and experience, and arrange the trek with licensed Tanzanian mountain operators, including all park fees, guides, porters and camping equipment.

Kilimanjaro is most often combined with a Tanzania safari and, for travellers arriving via Nairobi, a short Amboseli safari first — where Kilimanjaro itself forms the backdrop to your game drives.
