Built around the light, not just the wildlife
Golden-hour game drives, open-sided or pop-top 4x4s, and guides who read animal behaviour well enough to put you in the right place before the shot happens.
Game drives timed to the light, not the clock
Soft, warm light around sunrise and sunset is when wildlife is most active and images look their best. We plan drives around these windows, with your guide positioning the vehicle for the angle you need.
Midday sun casts harsh shadows and quiet wildlife, so most photographic itineraries rest through the heat before heading back out as the light softens again in the late afternoon.
Plan a photographic safari
Open-sided jeeps and a pop-top roof, built for the shot
Pop-top roofs give you a standing, unobstructed view in every direction - useful for tracking a cheetah at speed. On select safaris, fully open-sided vehicles remove the frame entirely, shooting straight from your seat.
We provide bean bags to steady your camera, plenty of cold water, and binoculars - everything set up so your only job is composing the frame.
Set up so you can focus on the frame
Timing your trip to the story you want to tell
Masai Mara, Kenya
July-October for the Great Migration's river crossings, with big cats and birdlife photographable year-round.
Amboseli, Kenya
Elephant herds set against Kilimanjaro's snow-capped peak - one of East Africa's most photographed backdrops.
Ndutu / Serengeti, Tanzania
December-March calving season - hundreds of thousands of newborns, and the predators that follow them.
January-March also brings migratory birds into the region, a strong window for bird photography alongside the big game.
Photographic safaris - your questions answered
What's the best time of day for safari photography?
Sunrise and sunset - the "golden hours" - offer soft light and the most active wildlife. Midday sun is harsher and animals are often resting in shade.
What's the best time of year for a photographic safari?
June-October (dry season) for clear skies and the Great Migration. December-March for calving season in the Ndutu region and migratory bird arrivals.
What vehicles are used for photographic safaris?
Custom safari vehicles with pop-top roofs or fully open sides, giving 360-degree views, plus bean bags and mounting points for stable shooting.
Is this safari style good for beginners?
Yes - our guides help with camera settings, composition and positioning regardless of experience level, so beginners and experienced photographers both leave with strong images.
Can I do a bird-focused photographic safari?
Yes - the Masai Mara, Amboseli's wetlands and the Serengeti's woodlands all offer strong opportunities to photograph resident and migratory bird species.
Can I customise my photographic safari?
Yes - choose your parks, accommodation level and pacing. Tell us whether you're focused on wildlife, landscapes or a specific season and we'll build the itinerary around it.
